Once upon a time there was a very kanjoos seth, a merchant known for his chindi chor giri I. E. his misery and he was such a miser that he would not give even a breadcrumb to the ants.
As everyone has to pass to the next world, he also died and was taken to Chitragupta, the celestial deity, looking after the new arrivals in the next realm and assigning them a place in heaven or hell, I. E., good or bad life on Earth.
The miser thought OMG, I have ever lived a self centred life, surely I will be sent to hell.
To his surprise, he was awarded stay in the heaven for sometime to enjoy his good deeds.
He said with Folded hands, Sir, kindly tell me what have I done ro deserve this good fortune.
I have never done a good deed in my Earth days.
And Chitragupta said, dear soul, when you used to have your morning tea, you would eat dry Toast isn't it?
The miser nodded.
And you never gave even a crumb to any animal or insect?
Yes, my Lord.
Well, unknown to you, a few very tiny Grains from your Toast used to fall on the floor and a few ants used to eat them. Sometimes those Grains would give life to a starving ant in their Nest and they used to bless you.
Your unintended deed has brought this good time for you. Although you have not earned it in the real sense, I have to award you with some time in heaven.
The miser then wowed to do charity whenever possible.
